Trinity Challenges Hybrids

New Winter Oilseed Rape Trinty has again produced excellent results in HGCA Recomended list trials. Trinity's combination of very high yields, on a par with leading hybrids, and the flexibility and durability of an OP variety, represents a real step forward in variety performance and provides growers with an excellent opportunity to produce a high yielding crop.

With the majority of results from HGCA  East West OSR RL trial sites now in, Trinity is confirming its potential as a major new variety by topping the list for gross output in 2013 with a mean of 108, leaving both hybrid and conventional varieties in its wake. “Trinity’s combination of hybrid level performance plus the consistency and flexibility of a conventional variety provides farmers with a solution to the dilemma of choosing which type and variety of OSR to select” comments Elsoms Seeds, Adrian Hayler. “There has been a huge amount of publicity promoting hybrid OSR as the only way forward but a very high yielding OP variety such as Trinity potentially provides growers with a more robust and flexible alternative to achieve high performance from their OSR crop” added Adrian.

“The fallout from the very difficult weather of the last 12 months has seen many growers delaying choosing their OSR varieties for planting this August. Varied performance levels from the last 2 harvests, the ability of varieties to survive challenging conditions and doubts about when the 2014 crop can be drilled have all contributed to farmers drawing breath before deciding how much OSR to drill,” said Adrian.

“Unlike several leading competitors we continue to work on developing high performing OP varieties, such as Trinity, alongside our promising hybrid programme for the simple reason that they can provide growers with an alternative solution to achieving top yields” commented Bob Miles, Elsoms Agriculture Director.

“Trinity has a very aggressive growth habit and this combined with the option of using the higher seed rates that can be used for conventional varieties, compared to hybrids, makes it an ideal choice for a wider range of establishment methods and timings” said Mark Nightingale, Elsoms OSR Breeder. “With a very high gross output, combined with its earliness, open branching, strong all-round disease resistance and short stiff straw, Trinity provides growers current with an excellent opportunity to secure a high gross output crop.” Mark concluded.
