How Elsoms and Bejo Are Investing in Your Future
A Conversation with Bejo Breeder - Yonina
The world of UK lettuce seed breeding is as dynamic as the markets it serves. With shifting consumer preferences, climate challenges, and the constant demand for quality, breeders play a crucial role in developing varieties that meet growers' needs. We sat down (stood in a field!) with Yonina, a breeder at Bejo, to explore the work behind some of the most exciting new leafy crop varieties coming to the UK.

Breeding for Performance and Market Demand
For Yonina, successful breeding isn't just about yield; it's about balance. "It’s about finding the sweet spot between agronomic performance and what the market values," she explains. Growers need crops that can withstand unpredictable weather conditions, resist disease, and remain consistent in quality throughout the season. At the same time, retailers and consumers are looking for uniformity, texture, and shelf life. Bringing these elements together is what drives her work.
One of the biggest challenges in leafy crops is adaptability. “Different regions present different growing conditions, and a variety that thrives in one area may struggle elsewhere," Yonina notes. "That’s why we put such a strong emphasis on trialling across multiple environments.”
Facing Climate and Disease Challenges
Looking ahead, Yonina sees climate change as a major factor shaping the future of leafy crop breeding. “We already see extreme weather patterns—sudden heavy rain, unexpected heatwaves—and this has a big impact on how crops grow,” she explains. Breeding varieties that perform consistently across these changing conditions is a key focus.
Disease resistance is another crucial aspect. “We’re seeing an increase in different Fusarium strains, and that’s something we have to stay ahead of,” Yonina says. Bejo’s breeding program is working to develop varieties with strong resistance packages, ensuring reliability for growers across multiple seasons.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Leafy Crops?
As market preferences continue to evolve, Yonina sees a growing interest in varieties that offer both convenience and resilience. “Consumers want leaves that stay fresh longer, have great texture, and are easy to prepare,” she says. “At the same time, growers need varieties that can handle shifting weather conditions without compromising on quality.”
With ongoing research and an ever-expanding knowledge of genetics, the future of leafy crops at Bejo and Elsoms looks promising
