Elsoms Oilseed Rape plant breeding and trialling team lead by Mark Nightingale, have successfully selected and brought to market a string of impressive and successful Winter Oilseed Rape varieties. Trinity, Elgar and Skye demonstrate Mark's philosophy of developing high output, "farmer friendly" varieties that have robust all round disease resistance and a strong agronomic package.

High Yielding Conventional Varieties
With the process of Oilseed Rape breeding becoming increasingly complex, in 2009 the SWO joint venture programme was formed to provide the technical and financial resources to develop successful varieties for farmers in the UK and mainland Europe.
SWO combined the Oilseed Rape breeding programmes of SW Lantmannen from Sweden, Florimond Desprez from France and Elsoms Seeds in the UK, with the business being based in Hadmersleben , Germany, supported by a network of breeding and trial stations across Europe, such as the Elsoms plant breeding station in Spalding and OSR trials ground near Nottingham.
In 2013 the first commercially available varieties started to emerge from this programme, a very high yielding OP variety with an excellent all round agronomic and disease resistance package, Trinity.
The change in ownership of the programme to Syngenta in 2014 has allowed all of the impressive work carried out by SWO in developing hybrid and OP varieties to be retained, but now sees it strengthened by a very significant increase in the resources available to the plant breeding teams.
Trialling and selection work for the UK continues to be led by Elsoms's Oilseed Rape Breeder, Mark Nightingale, who has successfully brought Trinity, Elgar and now Skye to the UK market and has a range of new varieties with impressive potential following close behind.
