Seed Treatments and Services
Priming
This is the activation of the germination process with the aim of giving accelerated rates of uniform emergence. Primed seed may be coated or pelleted. Elsoms prime seed using the Drum Process, which is licensed by the British Technology Group.
Filmcoating
This is a full, coloured coating around the seed that does not change the seed shape. This layer normally contains plant protection products, as detailed in the seed treatment table. Filmcoated seed is dust free and flows easier through the seeder units when compared with natural seed. We have a range of filmcoating units at Spalding and are pleased to offer this service to third parties.
Specific off label approvals
Recommendations on approved pesticide labels could not possibly cover the control of every pest/crop combination. Where there is no on label approval for a particular crop, growers or their representative organisations may apply to the Pesticides Safety Directorate for a Specific Off Label Approval (SOLA). If granted the product may then be legally used, but off label uses are not endorsed by the chemical manufacturer. Such off label use is at all times done at the users choosing and the commercial risk is entirely his or her own. Growers requesting seeds treated under an off label approval should read the relevant notice. All SOLA details can be found on the Pesticides Safety Directorate website: www.pesticides.gov.uk
Micro Pilling
Seed is coated at Elsoms with a smooth protective layer that fills in rough seed shape and adds weight to very light seed. Marketed under the name Topkote®, plant protection products can be incorporated into or on top of the coating. Please contact us for further details.
Use of pre-treated imported seed
Vegetable seed is often imported from other parts of Europe or from USA. The seed is usually chemically treated, sometimes with crop protectants that are not approved here as a seed treatment – eg. Brassica seed treated with Mundial (Fipronil). These procedures do not infringe the pesticide regulations. We ensure that the seed is labelled appropriately so that COSHH safety regulations are met. A health and safety data sheet is available on request
Pelleting
Elsoms have made significant investments in seed treating and have installed a fully automatic pelleter. This investment and the continued use of Incotec materials and technology will help to provide a better service and product for our customers, both now and into the future. The main purpose of pelleting is to improve uniformity of size and shape resulting in improved sowing ability. Many types of pelleting are available as an in-house service, we offer a range of pellet types on various crops, including onion and carrot.
We can treat large or small quantities of seed for our customers and we aim to provide a quick and efficient service. We have experience with many crop species, particularly Brassica, Alliums, Beetroot, Spinach, Carrots, Parsnips and many more. Customers wanting to discuss further details of our treatment services should contact Elsoms Seed Technology Manager. To assist in the smooth operation of our seed treatment procedures, pre-printed treatment request forms are available.
