Elsoms Onion Conference 2012

Elsoms welcomed over 40 onion customers representing growers, packers and agronomists in the industry to their biannual onion conference, held on 7th November 2012.
The conference started with a review of the UK onion season by Andy Richardson, AB Agronomy Ltd. Andy highlighted the difficulties of the late harvest and its effect on onion quality.
Other topics covered included new chemistry, technologies and storage techniques all helping to enhance the quality of onions on shelf.
Koen van der Voort, Manager of Breeding, De Groot en Slot, highlighted the various types of onion suitable for different areas around the world. Bejo and De Groot en Slot have bred varieties specifically with mildew resistance and are working on other disease resistant varieties.
Siem Beers, General Manager, Broer BV discussed how they’ve improved set production by using more vigorous quality testing, improved field selection and crop management and handling techniques.
Addressing the principles of seed testing, Liesbeth van der Heijden, Bejo BV, shared her expertise in onion seed treatments and testing.
Elsoms onion display included varieties Hybing F1, Hytech F1, Hyfort F1 and the mildew resistant variety Hylander F1.
Delegates were also given a tour of Elsoms impressive seed treatment facilities.
